Second Metro line starts this Year

E-mail Print PDF

Construction will start this year on a second Metro line in Suzhou City to connect the Jiangsu Province city to the high-speed railway linking Shanghai and Beijing.

A review was held over the weekend for the preliminary design for Metro Line 2, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

According to the plan, the new line will start from Suzhou Station on the new Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, now under construction, and extend 26 kilometers through the city's five districts.

Nineteen kilometers of track will be underground with 22 stations. The new line will link with Suzhou's Metro Line 1, which is being built.

The second Metro line, expected to start operation in 2014, is part of Suzhou's traffic development program to build four Metro lines in the 1,000-year ancient city. The city also plans to build a fast rail line linking Suzhou to neighboring Wuxi City's Suofang Airport.

Karneval / Carnival starts in Suzhou

E-mail Print PDF
Start in CarnivalThis year Suzhou Expat presents together with BAR BLUE on 11th November 2009 the biggest Carnival Start in Suzhou ever seen. Our German DJ plays the traditional Carnival Hits from Germany and around the world. International Party Music all night long. Our Party brings the right atmosphere and everybody who comes costumed will get one beer for free.

Officially Carnival starts in Germany at 11th November at 11:11am  (elften elften elf Uhr elf) and continues in a fairly low-key way for about three months before the Crazy Days (Tolle Tage) which climax on “Rosenmontag” (has nothing to do with roses, it is derived from "rasender Montag" raving Monday), the 42nd day before Easter. Carnival season is traditionally seen as a chance for people to go wild and let their hair down before Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. In Germany Carnival is a regional festival and is celebrated in different ways according to different local traditions. It known as Karneval,  (Rheinland area), Fastnacht (around the city of Mainz), Fasnet (in Swabia south-west region of Germany and in the south-west of the state of Bavaria), Fosnat (in the Franken region northern Bavaria), and as Fasching (around the city of munic and in Austria).

Carnival is also celebrated around the world......

Carnival in SuzhouPlaces especially noted for elaborate Carnival celebrations include 's-Hertogenbosch and Maastricht in The Netherlands, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz in Germany, Portugal, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Recife and Olinda in Brazil, Barranquilla and Pasto in Colombia, Port-of-Spain in Trinidad, Santiago in Cuba, Venice in Italy, Nice in France, New Orleans (See New Orleans Mardi Gras) and Mobile, Alabama in the USA, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Cádiz in Spain, Binche Eupen Hasselt and Malmédy in Belgium. The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney, Australia, is a well-known pride parade. The Quebec City Winter Carnival is the biggest winter-themed carnival in the world. It depends a lot on good snowfalls and very cold weather, to keep snowy ski trails in good condition and the many ice sculptures intact. For this reason it does not observe the lunar based Easter celebration but is fixed instead to the last days of January and first days of February of the solar calendar.

Sheraton Suzhou days are counted

E-mail Print PDF

Sheraton SuzhouThe last days of Sheraton Suzhou Hotel and Towers are running because the Pan Pacific Hotels Group are at the start of a "growth strategy" for China and that means they're going to open their second hotel in China in January 2010.

After opening up the Pan Pacific Xiamen earlier this year, they will now be taking over and rebranding the Sheraton Suzhou Hotel and Towers. It's a 484-room place which Sheraton just added a brand new wing of 99 rooms to earlier in the year (obviously nobody told them they'd be handing it over).

Pan Pacific Logo"Pan Pacific guests can expect an enhanced overall experience in line with the Pan Pacific standard of subtleness, delicate service and attention to details, starting from the booking process through to their arrival and stay at the hotel" said A. Patrick Imbardelli, President and CEO, Pan Pacific Hotels Group.

Before the January reopening they'll be putting some Pan Pacific "brand standards" in place. And then the group will be looking ahead to its continued attempt to rule China, with its third hotel planned for Tianjin in 2011.

Wal-Mart Supermarket opened

E-mail Print PDF

Suzhou MallIn the race along Donghuan Road Wal-Mart have open the doors. RT-Mart are still in preparation so Wal-Mart win the first game. The crowded Donghuan Road is shaping a prosperous shopping block, while the competition among Auchan, Carrefour, Wal-Mart and RT-Mart will be more white-hot.

In the supermarket industry, the distance between two neighboring hypermarkets must be two kilometers at least. But, RT-Mart, Wal-Mart, Auchan and Carrefour from the north to the south along Donghuan Road do not follow this convention, and the distance between RT-Mart and Wal-Mart is a mere pittance of 100 meters.RT-Mart on Donghuan Road

As the borderline of downtown Suzhou and SIP, Donghuan Road converges the dense population of the old Suzhou and the strong purchasing power of New Suzhou citizens, and is becoming a spot of hot contest among supermarkets.

E-mail Print PDF

Released by China’s Xinhua News Agency, the total solar eclipse is seen over Anji, east China’s Zhejiang Province, at 9:35 a.m.The full solar eclipse this morning fall in Water. Raining and heavy clouds blocked the view of the total solar eclipse. Darkness was felt in Suzhou around 9:35 to 9:40 but the eclipse was not clear visible due to heavy clouds, said some disappointed visitors on JinJi Lake who had arrived here from Korea to watch the event.

The biggest disappointment was for the big Tourism Groups, which had just come from far away to see this total solar eclipse and hope for a clear weather. But as the sky darkened fully for about five minutes, watchers became excited again.

“Although the rain came, We don’t want to screw up the mood. We want to enjoy the special day,” some girls said before dancing and singing in the rain with their friends. “We don’t want to wait until the next 300 years to see this again.”

Are you ready for the total solar eclipse

E-mail Print PDF

Gansu Province August 2008According to the weather forecast (Link) it should be rain Wednesday morning, let us together strongly hope that this will not happen, to be a witness of this full solar eclipse.

Also a report on the European Institute for Space Quantum Physics (Link) reporting of a Earthquake risk during this eclipse in Chengdu region of Sichuan. Let us cross the fingers and pray that this prediction are not happen.

For your reference, here are most important times for Suzhou for the path of the eclipse:

Partial Eclipse Start   08:22
Total Eclipse Start    09:35
Maximum Eclipse     09:37
Total Eclipse End     09:40
Partial Eclipse End   10:59

Of course, it's important to remember that if you value the ability to see, you cannot view the eclipse without special glasses. Sunglasses will not do the trick, please be aware of this. Most of the small shops in Suzhou are selling eclipse glasses for 8-10 RMB.

Please take a look here to some science guys how to view an eclipse.

A traditional way in the past of viewing the eclipse is, get a bucket of water and put some black ink (which can be bought for calligraphy at any Chinese stationary store) in it, then view the eclipse via its reflection.

For any photographer looking to shoot the eclipse, be sure to check out "How to photograph a solar eclipse", by Fred Espenak. Basically, you should have a Solar Filter, a darn decent telephoto (300mm+) or an attachment to a telescope.

Please remember that this full solar eclipse is a one in lifetime chance in Suzhou. The next one will only happen in 300 Years so in the Year 2309.
