The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences made the assessment in its 2008 Blue Book of City Competitiveness in China, issued Friday.

The top ten cities includes Hongkong, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Guangzhou, Kaohsiung, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Tianjin respectively.

Hong Kong has topped a list of 200 as China's most competitive city for the third year in a row.

Researchers say talent, innovation and large corporations' presence, were the three major aspects determining the city's competitiveness.

In addition, large-scale cities with big population have an overwhelming advantage. Researchers also weighed the strength of the country's 33 economic regions. The Yangtze River Delta Region and Pearl River Delta Region were the market leaders. According to the report, cities in West China are still lagging behind.
