There are many new villas or townhomes built by Jin Ji Hu Lake. Except for a few, expats live in rental housing due to the transient nature of their jobs. For investment purposes, expats do buy houses here. Just like any real estate investment, it will require time and effort to manage it. In addition, there are government regulations for expats to buy homes here. You may want to consult with a real estate broker to get familiar with Suzhou.

As for canal/river access, we can get to these places easily by car. Old watertowns are built by the canals. I am not aware of any villas built right next to it with canal access.

Hope this information helps.

Hi Esthee,

Welcome to Suzhou. Do you live in Luzi or SIP? Are you familiar with the Expats Association of Suzhou? There are many activities that you can participate. If you are interested to meet Christians, you can attend Suzhou International Fellowship and its activities. Both have over 500+ members.

Once you are connected with the expats groups, you will have new friends. Just like networking in the workplace, we need to network among ourselves too.

I am currently facilitating "Living Beyond Yourself" by Beth Moore for SIF Working Women. Most likely, another lady will finish some of the lessons for me when we repatriate to Chicago in March. It's held in my home on Friday nights from 6:30-9:00. This group is for foreign (non-Chinese) passport holders only. You can find out more on the SIF website.

Stay connected

Hi, All:

I've had Suzhou on my list for quite a while and wanted to ask for a little advice.

I'm a student from Virginia Beach, Virginia USA who would like to study in China. Suzhou has been recommended. Questions are:

What's a good school there for language study?
Is it easy to find an apartment?
Could I find a decent studio apartment for RMB 1800-2000?
Are there any places to dance and unwind?
Where would you suggest staying once I put feet to the ground in Suzhou?

Any help would be great. Thank you so much for you site!

Yours,
