Taicang International Gateway in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, expects throughput to double this year to two million TEUs with the provision of new international services.
And by 2011, the port expects to handle over five million TEUs by providing alternative services to complement the development of Shanghai port.
Fred Castonguay, managing director of Taicang International Gateway, said: "We expect to see a significant growth in our international service offerings." He said the US economic slowdown would not have a significant impact on the growth of throughput at Taicang. "We don't feel that the current situation of the US is going to have a tremendous impact on the projections going forward," he said, adding that the growth of the port is linked to the choices of services it provide to customers. "Even if throughput stays flat this year in Shanghai, I still think that we can achieve two million TEUs," Castonguay said.

Last hope … the female giant soft-shell turtle SHE is fed a special diet of raw meat. Her small pool has been encased with bulletproof glass. A surveillance camera monitors her movements. A guard is posted at night. The agenda is simple: the turtle must not die. Unnoticed and unappreciated for decades, a large female turtle with a stained, leathery shell is now a precious commodity in the decaying Changsha Zoo in China. Earlier this year, scientists concluded that she is the world's last known female giant Yangtze soft-shell turtle. She is about 80 years old and weighs almost 100lbs. The world's one undisputed, known male lives 500 miles away at a zoo in the city of Suzhou. He is 100 years old and weighs about 200lbs. They are the last hope of saving a species believed to be the largest freshwater turtles in the world. "It's a very dire situation," said Peter Pritchard, a prominent turtle expert in the US who has been involved in efforts to save the species. For many Chinese, turtles symbolise health and longevity, but the saga of the last two giant Yangtze soft-shells is more symbolic of the threatened state of wildlife and biodiversity in China. Pollution, hunting and rampant development are destroying natural habitats.

opening ceremony Established in 1981 by the Association of Chinese Filmmakers, the award is so named because 1981, according to traditional Chinese calendar, was the year of the rooster. The yearly awards are decided by a special committee composed of film experts. Final winners will be announced during the 16th Golden Rooster and Full Blossom Film Festival, running from October 23 to 28 in the our City Suzhou. The festival is a great event jointly organized by China Literature and Art Federation and China Film Artists Association since 1992, previously known as Hundred Flowers Award by "Popular Film" and Chinese Film Golden Rooster Award evaluation. Back in August 2006, Suzhou and China Film Artists Association signed an agreement on the permanent location of Golden Rooster Award evaluation in Suzhou, and this has a direct bearing on Suzhou being chosen for the site of film festival, decided through the traditional application procedure. For many years, China Film Artists Association has hoped to set up a permanent base for the evaluation of the Golden Rooster Award, the highest award for Chinese films. The name Jinji Lake, literally meaning Golden Rooster Lake, is a happy coincidence that prompted the departments concerned in Suzhou to propose the permanent base by the lake, and the idea was endorsed by China Film Artists Association. International Film The award evaluation base is located on the eastern shore of Jinji Lake with an area of over 100 mu, which includes standard film projection hall, living accommodations for the evaluation committee members, the lakeside Jinji Award Park, an exhibition hall for Golden Rooster Award and Hundred Flower Award, and a water-born "Star Road". The base is preparing to hold China Suzhou Jinji Lake Film Month and other activities, and at appropriate time, to host a thematic international film festival. The base will be ready to receive the evaluation committee members during the 26th China Golden Rooster Film Award in 2007.
